Embrace Your Natural Curls
Curly hair has always stood out from other textures, but for many years, people didn’t fully understand it. Due to this lack of understanding, many opted to straighten or chemically treat their hair rather than learning how to care for and maintain their natural curls. Step 1 is understanding your curl type.
Understanding your curl pattern is essential for selecting the right products and styling techniques. Your curls can be categorised into three main types, with subcategories that help further define your specific texture:
Type 2 (Wavy Hair): This category includes 2A, 2B, and 2C, which feature looser waves that create a subtle "S" shape.
Type 3 (Curly Hair): Types 3A, 3B, and 3C represent tighter curls, from soft spirals to more defined ringlets.
Type 4 (Coily Hair): Types 4A, 4B, and 4C are coarser, more tightly coiled curls, often with a zigzag pattern or very tight coils.
It's also common for different curl patterns to coexist on the same head of hair. Your curls are unique to you, so learning what your hair needs is crucial. Figuring out the right products for your curls often takes some experimentation, which is why we offer a 30 day guarantee here at Morala https://morala.co.uk/policies/refund-policy. Any product that you buy that you aren’t happy with, we’ll refund you once you’ve returned it to us (we obviously can’t refund you if you’ve used most of it but of course we understand a few washes are needed to trial them properly). We want all of our customers to love our products as much as we do but we realise that with today’s cost of living, it’s a big expense buying good quality hair products.
Understand Your Hair’s Porosity
Hair porosity refers to how effectively your hair absorbs and retains moisture. This factor plays a huge role in how your curls behave, particularly in terms of frizz. Porosity is divided into three categories:
High Porosity: Hair absorbs moisture quickly but has difficulty retaining it.
Medium Porosity: Hair absorbs and holds moisture in a balanced way.
Low Porosity: Hair struggles to absorb moisture but holds onto it once it does.
Once you determine your porosity level, we recommend trialling different quantities of each of our products on wash day to find the perfect balance and ensure you’re not overloading your low porosity hair or under nourishing your high porosity curls.
Styling Tips for Defined Curls
To enhance your curls, try using a diffuser—a round attachment for your blow dryer with prongs that help shape and define your curls. We recommend hover diffusing for 5-10 minutes first (holding the diffuser close to your curls without them touching) to reduce the amount of frizz created during the drying process, then once you feel as if the curls are over halfway through being dry, start to pixie diffuse, gently place small sections of hair into the diffuser. Hold the diffuser to your scalp and dry in an upward motion to lift and define the curls.
If diffusers aren’t your thing, another option is to manually scrunch or roll individual curls after applying product. We recommend applying slightly more of our Morala Curl Defining Gel if you’re air drying, which nourishes curls while adding shine and moisture, leaving your curls soft with no crunchy or sticky residue.
For an easy, elegant look, consider gathering your curls into a ponytail or updo. You can leave a few curls loose near your temples or ears for a playful, framed look.
